Our story
Bert Vis Flooring started operating out of Bert’s Caistor Centre rented garage in 1978. Flooring was familiar to the Dutch immigrant whose father, Roelof, had a flooring store in the Netherlands where Bert lived his childhood. Bert started the business together with his wife, Joan. Driven by their Christian faith, their new business was service oriented accompanied with quality workmanship. After a couple years, they were able to purchase their own home in Grassie Ontario, where they also relocated the business to the attached garage. It was here that Bert’s brother, Wolter, joined them after also immigrating from the Netherlands. Under the Lord’s blessing, the business continued to grow and flourish soon outgrowing its garage location.
In 1984, they moved the business to a rented storefront in Smithville Ontario and also incorporated the business. After a few years, the Smithville Bakery closed its doors and Bert Vis Flooring Inc. purchased their building and again relocated the business—this time just a few doors down from the rented location.
In 1997, Bert Vis Flooring Inc. purchased Peninsula Tile in Grimsby, starting a second location. A few short years later, Will’s Motors relocated from Smithville to Grimsby leaving behind a large vacant building. Bert Vis Flooring purchased the building and amalgamated the two small locations into one large location.
In the Spring of 2017, Bert and Joan’s son Ralph together with his wife Jane, purchased the business and became the official owners. Bert continues to be involved in the business and his brother Wolter retains his role as general manager. Today, Bert Vis Flooring remains a family run business with over twenty employees including Bert and Joan’s son Henry. The management and staff at Bert Vis Flooring strive to continue building on the reputation of hard work, dedicated service, and quality workmanship that began with Bert, Joan and Wolter.
